Tribest Sousvant is an all-in-one Sous Vide oven. Its unique design gives many advantages.
What’s in Box?
Sousvant Sous Vide oven
Storage bag
User manual
Design
A design of Sousvant is very simple. A water bath (=carafe) is mounted on an electrical base. All electric units are integrated into the base. A water carafe is clear-plastic all around so you can perfectly see foods through it. A lid, which is also clear, helps to get targetted temperature quickly, and you don’t have to worry about water evaporation.
Specifications
Dimension: 11.5″ W x 7.5″ D x 15.5″ H
Weight: 10 lbs
Power: 1000 Watts
Temperature Range: 95 degrees F to 194 degrees F
Carafe capacity: 3 gallons
The carafe is removable. It has big and sturdy handles on both sides so you can lift it up from the base, take it to a sink, and fill or clean it up easily. And its rectangular and kind of flat shape helps it to fit in an ordinary kitchen sink. The capacity of the carafe is 3 gallons, which may not be large enough for those who want to cook a large amount of food at a time.
The base has a back-lit display and buttons in the center. There are four buttons, Cook, Up, Down, and Stop. The display shows a temperature on the top and time on the bottom. There is no countdown timer. Time on the display shows how long it’s been cooking after it reached targeted temperature, and it starts automatically.
There is no WiFi or Bluetooth feature.
Conclusion
The removable carafe makes everything convenient. From preparing to cleaning, it’s a lot easier than other Sous Vide ovens. Sousvant is well-designed for home use, and It looks beautiful on a kitchen counter. Since there is no insulation, it may not be suitable for a long cook (hours or day.) If you want to give your kitchen a modern look, and you are OK with 3-gallon capacity, Sousvant is worth the price. Click here to see the latest price.
Gourmia GSV-130 is a budget immersion circulator. It doesn’t have Bluetooth or WiFi, and it can’t cook a large amount in a large container. But it has a powerful heater for its price.
What’s in Box?
Gourmia GSV-130 immersion circulator
Recipe book
Design
It’s very similar in appearance to Anova immersion circulator. A backlit display and buttons are on the top, and a wheel to adjust temperature and timer on the side. The display looks more modern than Anova’s. A big clip can open and pinch up to 1 inch.
Specifications
Dimensions: 4 x 5 x 14.5 inches
Weight: 2.3 lbs
Power: 1200 Watt
Maximum water capacity: 3.5 gallons
Maximum temperature: 203 degrees F (95 degrees C)
Minimum water depth: 3 inches
Maximum: 6 inches
Gourmia GSV-130 has a powerful 1200-watt heater, which is remarkable for its price. As a comparison, Chefsteps Joule is 1100 watts, and Anova WiFi is 900 watts. While it has a powerful heater, maximum water capacity is modest. The size of up to 3.5 gallons may be a problem for those who have a big family or want to cook entire meals for a week.
Other Gourmia immersion circulators
Gourmia has released other models for sous vide immersion circulator. GSV-140 has the same 1200-watt heater. It can work in up to 10 gallons containers. GSV-150 has added another feature. It’s WiFi. GSV-150 works with a smartphone app, and you can control it via WiFi away from home. These two models are more expensive than GSV-130 and not much different from Anova’s prices. So, when you consider purchasing these models, you may want to consider Anova’s immersion circulators, too.
Conclusion
Gourmia GSV-130 is a very basic immersion circulator. Before purchasing, make sure you are using container or pod smaller than 3.5-gallon capacity. And if you don’t need WiFi features to control over smartphones apps or internet, Gourmia GSV-130 will be the best budget addition to your kitchen. Available in three colors, Black, Bronze, and White. Click here to see the price.

Quick Start Guide
User manual
Design
Anova is made out of polycarbonate on an upper body and stainless steel on the bottom. The stainless steel bottom contains a heating element, thermometer, and circulator, and it can be opened by twisting it for cleaning or maintenance. A display on the top is very basic, showing temperature and timer. There are also a Bluetooth (1st gen) or WiFi (2nd gen) indicator light, a start/pause touch button, and a timer indicator light. Temperature can be set quickly by spinning a blue-backlit wheel on the side.
A clamp is designed to attach to a water bath, and the device is slipped into it. The clamp can open up to 1.25 inch (317.5 mm), so it can attach to many kinds of container, even it has a thick wall like a cooler box.
Specifications
Dimension: 2.75″ (698 mm) x 14.75″ (368 mm)
Weight: 2.5 lbs (1.1 kg)
Temperature range: 77 degrees F (25 degrees C) to 210 degrees F (99 degrees C)
Maximum immersion depth: 7.25″ (184 mm)
Minimum immersion depth: 2.5″ (635 mm)
Tank capacity: 4 to 5 gallons (15 to 19 liters)
Difference between 1st gen and 2nd gen
Anova Bluetooth (1st gen) and WiFi (2nd gen) look the same. There are only two differences in performance between them. First, the 2nd gen is a little more powerful than the 1st gen by 100 watts output power. Second, while the 1st gen has only Bluetooth, and the 2nd gen has both Bluetooth and WiFi. The 2nd gen’s WiFi connectivity allows you to control the device remotely. But, when you are close to Anova, 2nd gen also uses Bluetooth to connect your smartphone.
As another benefit come from WiFi connectivity, the 2nd gen works with Alexa. You can say things like,
“Alexa, ask Anova to cook chicken”
“Alexa, ask Anova to check the status”
“Alexa, ask Anova to heat the water to 140 degrees”
Both versions work with the same smartphone app. In the app, you can see many recipes. They are not only basic ones but personal ones from Anova users who upload their recipes and share them in the app. The 1st gen doesn’t have the features of Alexa skill or operating remotely, but it’s cheaper than the 2nd gen (usually $50 less)
Conclusion
Anova Sous Vide Precision Cooker is affordable and easy to use. It can work with your smartphone, but it’s also a standalone device. You don’t need a smartphone to control the device. Everything can be done by pressing buttons on the device. The 1st gen (Bluetooth) and the 2nd gen (WiFi) are both available to purchase. WiFi version is a little more powerful, and it also has features of Alexa compatibility and a remote operation over the internet. Reportedly, Alexa skill has an issue of connectivity, but it may be improving in the future. Unless you need these features, the 1st gen is suitable for you because it is cheaper than the 2nd gen. Overall, both versions of Anova precision cooker are reliable, reasonable, and easy to use. Click here to the prices of both versions.
ChefSteps Joule is the smallest and sleekest immersion circulator available today. There is no bulky part you may find in other brands’ immersion circulators. Despite its small size, output power is 1100 watts. Two colors are available: All White or White/Stainless Steel.
Nearly half size of most competitors. Save space in a pot, and slip into a top drawer with your silverware when no use.
With a magnetic base and a simple clip, it can attach to almost any container, pot, or pan.
1100 watts of power heats up fast. Precise to 0.2°F / 0.1°C.
Works with iOS and Android devices. It can connect with Bluetooth only, and you can use WiFi to control it away from home.
Works with Alexa.
What in Box?
Joule (That’s it)
Pull off the sleeve, and you see a black box that securely holds the device. That’s all in it. There is an instruction printed inside of the black box. You will get more details, recipes, and tips from its smartphone app: “Joule: Sous Vide by ChefSteps.”
Design
Plain and simple, 11 inch long cylinder with a clip on the side. Magnetic base on the bottom, LED indicator and a single button to stop the machine on the top. Horizontal slit on the bottom is an inlet of water. There is a hole on the side around 4 inches from the bottom, which is an outlet for water.
The clip is designed for pots or container that have a thin wall. It’s not recommended to use for containers that have a thick wall, such as a cooler box.
Specifications
Dimension: 1.85″ (47 mm) x 11″ (280 mm)
Weight: 1.28 lbs (580 g)
Performance: 1100 watts
Temperature accuracy: +/- 0.2 degree F (0.1 degree C)
Maximum water temperature: 208 degree F (98 degrees C)
Maximum bath volume: 10 gallons (40 liters)
Minimum water depth: 1.5″ (38 mm)
Maximum water depth: 8″ (203 mm)
As a comparison, Anova WiFi is 900 watts, and Gourmia GSV130 is 1200 watts. Considering the size, Joule has a very powerful heater. And, most other brands’ immersion circulators can handle 5 to 6 gallons of water at max, but Joule can do 10 gallons of water. While Joule is useful when you cook a large amount of food, it also has a feature for cooking a small amount of food. The minimum depth of water is as low as 1.5 inches. So, you can even use a frying pan with Joule for sous vide cooking.
Control from anywhere
Joule has both Bluetooth and WiFi. However, you don’t need WiFi to control Joule. All you need are your smartphone with Bluetooth and Joule mobile app. WiFi is used when you are not home. You can control it remotely over the internet with a WiFi connection.
Works with Alexa
If you have Alexa-enabled devices, such as Amazon Echo and Fire TV, you can control Joule with your voice. It’s a great advantage over competitors. And more importantly, it’s a great advantage to Joule itself. That’s because Joule has no display on the device. It has only a button on the top to stop the machine. All controls like setting temperature and timer, or starting the device, need to be done by the smartphone app. But, now you have another option, controlling with your voice! Here are some examples you can ask Alexa,
“Alexa, ask Joule to cook pork chop like last time.”
“Alexa, ask Joule, what is the time and temperature for tenderloin steak?”
“Alexa, ask Joule to set the temperature to 165 degrees.”
“Alexa, ask Joule to check the status.”
As of writing this post, Alexa can’t set a timer or tell you how much a timer is left, but smart home technology is always improving. It may be able to do these things in the future.
Conclusion
The smallest, powerful, and well-designed. Joule is the most innovative immersion circulator available today. Its features outperform all other competitors. However, one negative thing you have to accept is that it’s not a standalone device. You always need your smartphone to control the device. If you are OK with that, there is no doubt that Joule is the best immersion circulator available today. Check the price of Joule at amazon.com.
“Sous Vide” is a French word. A literal translation is “Under Vacuum.”
The first thing to do is to pack food in a vacuum sealing bag. Then, immerse in hot water at a consistent temperature for a specified period (typically lower temperature for a more extended period than cooking with fire). This cooking technique has existed for decades, but not for home use because machines were expensive and giant. Now that many Sous Vide machines introduced for home cooking in the last couple of years, Sous Vide became well-known and implemented for home cooking. Here are some popular Sous Vide machines in 2017.
The Best Immersion Circulators
There are mainly two types of Sous Vide machines: immersion circulators and sous vide ovens. Immersion circulators can work with any containers that already exist in your house. You can store them in a kitchen drawer when not in use. They are suitable for those who don’t want another appliance to take space on kitchen counter. Here are three best Sous Vide immersion circulators in 2017.
ChefSteps Joule
It’s nearly half size of competitors. However, ChefSteps Joule’s benefits are not only design. There are many remarkable features. This small gadget needs only 1.5-inch deep water. While it can work fine in a small pot, a manufacturer claims that it can be used in up to 10 gallons of a water container. Read a full review.
Anova WiFi Precision Cooker
It’s probably the most well-known brand for Sous Vide machines. It works with a mobile app to set a timer, schedule, notification, etc. It also works as a standalone device without the app. With a display of temperature and timer on the top, a dial to set temperature on the side. It’s easy to use, and reliable. The latest version uses WiFi to connect to your smartphone. You can even operate the machine away from home. Read a full review.
Gourmia GSV-130
A price of Gourmia GSV-130 is a half or less than competitors. It doesn’t have Wifi or Bluetooth to connect to your smartphone. It only works by pressing buttons on the device. A large digital display on the top is more sophisticated and showing more information than Anova’s. It doesn’t have outstanding features. But it’s very easy to use, and the price is very appealing. Read a full review.
Here are some popular Sous Vide Ovens in 2017. They are all-in-one machines for Sous Vide cooking. They consist of a water bath, heater, thermometer, timers, etc. Since they have a water bath, the size of the machine is large. While immersion circulators are called Kitchen Gadgets, Sous Vide Ovens are considered as small appliances.
Tribest Sousvant
All electric parts are in a bottom base, and a water bath (=carafe) is mounted on the base. The carafe can be removed from the base so you can take it to the sink to fill it up, empty, or wash easily. The carafe are clear all around. Unlike other sous vide ovens, you can perfectly see the progress of cooking without opening the lid. A compact and beautiful design allows the machine take your kitchen space positively. Read a full review.
SousVide Supreme / Supreme Demi
SousVide Supreme and Demi are energy-efficient all-in-one Sous Vide ovens. Well-designed pouch rack can be used in three different ways. A capacity of Supreme is 3 gallons, and Demi is 2.3 gallons. A good insulation makes the machines energy-efficient. The heating system doesn’t need a motor to circulate water, so it’s very quiet operation. You can truly set and forget the machines and do whatever you like until timer goes off. Read a full review.
Gourmia GSV-550 / GSV-900
As immersion circulators, Gourmia has Sous Vide ovens at reasonable prices. Gourmia GSV-550 and GSV-900 are 9qt and 10qt capacity all-in-one Sous Vide ovens. A stainless steel rack comes with both models. They can’t beat SousVide Supreme/Demi in quality and feature, but the prices are much less. Read a full review.

Check back often for an update. See also: Samsung Gear VR Controller review
Over two years since the first consumer version of Gear VR launched, Samsung has finally released a motion controller for their headsets called Gear VR Controller.
Design
The Gear VR controller consists of a clickable trackpad, home button, back button, volume buttons, and trigger. It’s almost the same length as Daydream View’s controller, and it looks like a small version of HTC Vive’s controller. The Gear VR controller has an angle, and the back of angled head has a trigger button which can be used very intuitively in many VR games.
Power
The controller uses two AAA batteries. According to Samsung, it will last up to 80 hours of gameplay.
Compatibility
2017 version, SM-R324 w/controller
The controller is compatible with all version (2015, 2016, and 2017) of Gear VRs. It connects via Bluetooth with your Samsung Galaxy smartphone, so a model of the headset has nothing to do with the compatibility. A new Gear VR headset (2017 ver, SM-R324, $130) includes the controller, but you can buy only the controller for $40 if you already have the headset. If you have previous version headsets, especially 2016 ver, you don’t have to buy the whole set (2017 version) because 2016 and 2017 version headsets are identical.
First, install two AAA batteries included in the box. Then, open Oculus app and tap “Controller” in the settings and “Pair.” You may need to update the app before pairing. Then continue to the calibration steps. The entire process for the setup takes only a few minutes. Please note that unlike HTC Vive or Oculus Rift, there is only one Gear VR controller used at the same time.
The controller makes gameplay more immersive intuitively. For example, Drop Dead, one of the best shooting games can be played far more naturally. Instead of moving your head to aim and tapping a trackpad on the side of the headset to shoot, all you need is to move your hand to aim and pull the trigger, just like a gun. Not only games, but the controller’s motion tracking feature is also useful for searching and selecting apps and games in Oculus home screen, typing on a virtual keyboard.
Conclusion
Gear VR Controller is about the same size as Google’s Daydream View’s controller. But Gear VR controller has a trigger button on the back of the angled head which is more intuitive and immersive in VR games. Unlike HTC Vive or Oculus Rift’s controllers, only one controller can be used at the same time, and it’s not tracked in 3D space. The controller is more like a wireless pointer, but there are more advantages than it may sound. I believe that it’s the controller all Gear VR owners should have.
BlackVue DR650S-2CH is a dual channel (front and rear) dash cam. Both cameras have 360-degree rotating cylinder design. The front camera is around 4.5 inches wide, and the rear camera is around 2.5 inches. The front cam has a plug for 12V power, V-input from the rear camera, and Wi-Fi on/off button on the side. A slot for microSD card is located on the same side but hidden by a cover. Pull out cables and remove the cover, and you can access to a memory card. Both cameras use adhesive to stick on either a windshield or rear window. 360-degree rotating design allows you to change an angle, or even turn 180-degree to record inside of the car.
Video Quality
The front cam offers Full HD 1080p video quality, and the rear cam offers Standard HD 720p. The both cams have 129-degree viewing angle, which is relatively narrower than other brands of dash cams. (Thinkware 140-degree, Cobra 160-degree)
Memory Card
The dash cam is compatible with up to 128GB memory card. It is recommended to format it once a week. To format a memory card, hold down the Wi-Fi button on the side for 10 seconds.
Video Files
There are three types of files (Normal/Event/Parking) created by the dash cam depending on the circumstances. These files can be copied, moved, renamed or deleted in an app. Please note, for parking surveillance, the dash cam needs a power supply such as Power Magic Pro or Power Magic Battery Pack when your car is parked.
Since there is no display on the dash cam, it’s the only way to see or manage videos in the app on smartphones or computers. For the app on smartphones, the dash cam connects to your smartphone via Wi-Fi. So, you don’t need to remove a memory card. In addition to managing recorded videos, you can also see Live View that is currently being recorded.
For the app on a computer, you do need to remove a memory card. Advantages of the app on a computer are a larger display, zoom features, showing front and rear videos simultaneously, and displaying location on a map.
BlackVue Cloud
If you have a Wi-Fi hotspot or Wi-Fi network near your car, you can use Blackvue Cloud. The Blackvue mobile app connects to the dash cam anytime from anywhere as long as you have an internet connection. You can remotely organize video files, watch live view or set up push notifications to your smartphone. In addition to them, you can talk to a driver using built-in microphone and speaker of the dash cam. To use Cloud features, you will need a Wi-Fi hotspot’s device and plan. And the dash cam needs a power supply such as Power Magic Pro or Power Magic Battery Pack to have the dash cam connected all the time even when you park your car.
Conclusion
BlackVue DR650S-2CH is Wi-Fi enabled dash cam. With Blackvue’s mobile app, you can manage video files without removing a memory card. Plus, if you have Wi-Fi hotspot in your car, you are always connected to the dash cam over the cloud. Please note that the dash cam doesn’t include a Wi-Fi hotspot device and plan. A hardwiring kit is necessary for parking surveillance, and it is sold separately as well. Thus, if you want to use all features of the dash cam, overall costs will be expensive. But it’s believed that BlackVue DR650S-2CH is one of the most innovative dash cams on the market.
Thinkware F770 is a discreet dash cam. Thanks to a built-in Wi-Fi, LCD screen has been eliminated. Instead, you can use your mobile device with an app as a display of dash cam. A shape of the dash cam is flat. It’s mounted on a windshield with an adhesive bracket. A camera lens is located near the corner of the device. So, you can mount it behind a rear-view mirror, but the lens can be at the center of the windshield as close as possible. The lens can be adjusted vertically after installation. All buttons are located on the back of the device, and a power port, video input for an optional read camera, and memory card slot are on the sides.
Video Quality
Thinkware F770 offers Full-HD 1080p video quality. The optional rear camera does the same. They both have 140-degree viewing angle. And, the front camera (F770) has Super Night Vision feature for a parking surveillance in a low-light condition.
Memory Card
It’s compatible with 16GB, 32GB, and 64GB memory cards. It’s recommended to be formatted every two weeks for maximizing the lifetime of a memory card.
Types of Recorded Files and Folders
Continuous – a name of folder “cont_rec” When the ignition is on, a dash cam automatically starts recording. All recordings are 1 minutes segments.
Incident Continuous – a name of folder “evt_rec” When G-sensor detects an impact, the dash cam will store the recording of 10 seconds before and after the impact. (total 20-second recording) Please note that driving over speed bumps, manholes, etc. can also be detected as an impact. Conversely, if the level of impact is smaller than the sensitivity of the G-sensor, the event won’t be treated as an incident. The sensitivity can be configured in the setting.
Parking Incident – a name of folder “parking_rec” When a dash cam detects an impact during parking mode, it will store the 10 seconds before and after the impact. (total 20-second recording)
Motion Detection – a name of folder “motion_rec” When a dash cam detects a motion during parking mode, it stores the recording of 10 seconds before and after the detection (total 20-second recording) Optional rear camera also has the motion sensor to initiate Motion Detection recordings.
Time Lapse Recording – a name of folder “motion_timelapse_rec” Time Lapse recordings is the feature of shooting still pictures in parking mode, one frame per second. When a dash cam detects an impact during parking mode, it saves the recording of 3-minutes before and after the impact. (total 6 minutes) Please note that you can’t use a motion detection for Time Lapse recording.
Manual Recording – a name of folder “manual_rec” It allows you to save the recordings in the different folder manually, so the recordings are protected from overwriting. Pressing REC button saves the recording of 10 seconds before and 50 seconds after. (total 1-minute recording) It is a useful feature when you witness something such as an accident that you don’t directly involve or a rare phenomenon like lightening strike and meteor shower.
Safety Camera Alert
Thinkware F770 offers Safety Camera Alert which warns you by voice when red light cameras, speed cameras, etc. are nearby. For this alert system, the camera uses a built-in GPS and database that you need to download from the website and save on the memory card.
LDWS and FCWS
LDWS stands for Lane Departure Warning System, and FCWS stands for Forward Collision Warning System (FCWS). They warn you by a chime. These warning systems need calibration first. Driving at night and road surface conditions can affect the accuracy of the systems. And they also use GPS to know the speed. So, interference with GPS signals such as a tunnel, weather conditions, or geographical features can also affect the accuracy of the systems.
How to Upgrading Firmware, Download Speed Cam Data
Visit www.thinkware.com and follow the instruction. You will need to download a file from the website and copy or unzip in the memory card you use for your dash cam. When the memory card contains the file, the dash cam will automatically upgrade firmware or speed cam data.
Thinkware Dash Cam Mobile Viewer
It’s application for Android and iOS devices. Your mobile device connects to a dash cam over Wi-Fi signal. You can see, download, or delete the recordings. You can also change the settings and perform a calibration for LDWS and FCWS in the app, too. Live View can be used as a monitor for adjusting camera’s angle. But, please note that Live View disables the continuous recording.
PC Viewer Software
It’s software for Windows PC and Mac. You need to remove a memory card from a dash cam and insert into a computer. In software, you can do the same things like the mobile app except for Live View. Also, thanks to a built-in GPS, you can see a map with the recordings. It shows them all simultaneously.
Conclusion
Thinkware F770 is a Wi-Fi enabled dash cam. There is no need for an LCD screen. Thus, the device is small and discreet. It has Full HD camera, and an optional rear camera has the same video quality. The front camera (F770) has also Super Night Vision to capture the video in low-light condition while parking mode. You can also use Time Lapse Recordings as another method for parking surveillance. A hardwired kit is necessary for parking surveillance and sold separately. In the mobile app, not only can you see the recordings, but also download or delete them without removing a memory card. However, there is no cloud storage service like BlackVue dash cam. Overall, Thinkware F770 is a discreet, reliable, high-quality dash cam.
