Travel Voltage Transformer, Converter, or Adapter. Which one do I need?

You may be aware of the difference in physical plug and outlet shape around the world. But, that’s not only the difference. If you take your electric devices and use them in other countries, you should be careful with the difference in the voltage at your destination. However, the first thing you should do is to check the label, back of the plug, or instruction manual or your device you want to use abroad. If it says, “100-240 V, 50/60 Hz, you can use it anywhere in the world. All you need is an adapter to make a fit to an outlet at your destination. If it says something like, “120 V, 60 Hz”, you will need a travel voltage transformer or converter in addition to an adapter.

What happens when you use 110V electric devices in 220V outlet?

This can be dangerous. Some heating devices like hair driers or electric kettles will produce more heat than they are supposed to do. If electric devices have a motor such as fans, circular saws, they move faster than they suppose to do. These results are because more electricity flows to the devices. It could burn out wires very quickly. Hope that some protection devices such as fuse in the device or circuit breaker cut the power. Otherwise, a wire in the device melts and break the device. What’s more, overheated devices can cause a fire.

image of 220v warning

What happens when you use 220V electrical devices in 110V outlet?

On the contrary, when 220V electric devices are used in 110V outlet, they perform poorly. Heating devices never reach the desired temperature, electric fans spin slowly. These results are because of not enough electricity flowing to the devices. There is no risk of burnout or fire, but 220V electric devices can be useless when they are plugged into 110V outlet.

What is happening?

image of ohms watts laws

The Ohm’s law and Watt’s law explain everything. Here is the Ohm’s law, I (current) = V (voltage) / R (resistance). When turning on the switch, electric current flows to a device. The current is under control because a voltage is fixed, and so is resistance. Some devices, say a heater, can change resistance. When you set in high temperature, it reduces the resistance so more current flows to the heater. When you set in low temperature, it raises the resistance so less current flows to the heater.

When a 110V device is used in 220V outlet, 2 times current flows to the device. If a device is a low wattage item such an electric fan, 2 times current doesn’t turn off the breaker in the house. However, it’s too much for the device. Besides, according to Watt’s law, W (wattage) = I (current) x V (voltage), the fan spins 4 times faster. If it’s a heating device, it produces the heat 4 times hotter. The devices will burn out and cause a fire.

When a 220V device in used in a 110V outlet, half current flows to the device. Instead of no risk of burnout or fire, the performance of the device is 4 times less.

Does a small difference in voltage matter?

image of akihabara tokyo japan

The small differences between 110V and 120V or 220V and 240V are within tolerances of most (but not all) electrical devices. However, 100V and 120V can be large enough to make a difference in performance, shorten the life of electrical devices, or cause burnout or fire. Japan is the only country in the world that uses 100V outlets. Taking the U.S 120V electrical devices to Japan, or bring Japanese 100V to the U.S., in both cases, it’s recommended to use a step up/down transformer.

What is Hz?

Hz = Hertz. It’s a unit of frequency. Unlike DC (Direct Current), AC (Alternating Current) continuously changes the polarities. Hertz shows how many times per second this cycle is happening. You can ignore the difference in the frequency for electrical devices that produce the heat. For devices with motors or clocks, they may perform either faster or slower. However, recent electrical devices typically carried for travel work on both frequencies. Check the label, back of the device, or instruction manual. If it says, “50-60Hz”, it will work with both frequencies.

Transformer or Converter

image of voltage transformer

If you want to use a 120V device in a 220V outlet, you can use a transformer or converter. Conversely, if you want to use a 220V device in a 120V outlet, you will need a transformer. There are three types of transformer, step-up, step-down, or both step-up/down. Step-up transformers are used for a higher voltage device into a lower voltage outlet. Step-down transformers are used for a lower voltage device into a higher voltage outlet.

image of travel voltage converter

Converters only step down voltage, not raise it. They can be lighter and more compact than transformers. And they can handle large wattage. But, they are not designed to operate for long hours. And they can’t be used for electronic devices, which contains chips or circuits such as a computer, and even a battery charger. Most electronic devices, however, are originally multi-voltage and frequency (100-240V 50-60Hz). They most likely don’t require either transformers or converters in the first place.

When you buy a transformer or converter, you should make sure that wattage of the transformer or converter is greater than the wattage of your device that you want to use abroad. Some devices don’t show a wattage. If so, you can simply calculate the wattage by multiplying the voltage and the current. If it shows “mA”, divide by 1000.

Conclusion

image of dual voltage switch on a hair dryer

These days, most electronic devices (contains chips or circuits such as a laptop, chargers for mobile devices) are multi-voltage and frequency. They work anywhere in the world without a voltage transformer or converter, but they may need an adapter.

Many electrical devices such as a hair dryer and electric kettle may also be dual-voltage. So, you can use them abroad without a transformer or converter.

image of Whlzd All in One International Power Adapter

If you need a voltage transformer or converter, make sure that a transformer or converter should output greater than your device’s wattage. And remember voltage converters only steps down the voltage, not raise it. Transformers are either step-up, step-down, or both.

How do you know the capacity of portable battery charger you need?

Does a battery of your cell phone, tablet, or laptop last every day before you arrive home? Have you ever experienced the battery was gone quickly when you travel because of frequently seeing a map and taking pictures? Carrying a portable battery charger gets you free from the problem. There are so many brands and a wide price range for them. But, you should choose the best one for you based on capacity, features, design, and dependability. Here is the post about how to know the capacity of portable battery charger you need.

image of portable battery charger

Capacity of Your Device

To find out what capacity of portable battery charger you need, the first thing you need to know is the battery capacity of your device. If you can see the battery directly, it most likely says the capacity in mAh somewhere on the battery itself. For some electric devices, the batteries aren’t accessible by users. If so, you can search it online with device name or model number. If it’s a smartphone, the capacity can be found somewhere in settings. For example, to find out the Samsung S9’s battery capacity, go to Settings > About Phone > Battery information. As you see in the picture below, the battery capacity of S9 is 3000 mAh.

image of battery capacity of samsung galaxy s9

Energy Loss

Now that you know the battery capacity of your device, you know the capacity of portable battery charger. You may expect a 15000 mAh charger to give 5 times of charges to S9. But, in reality, some energy will be lost in charging process. So, just remember 2/3 of the capacity of charger will be actually transferred to your device. For example, if you want a charger capable of 2 times charges for S9, you will need a charger with 9000 mAh or more.

Variety of Size and Capacity

The bigger a portable battery charger, the higher capacity it has. And, it tend to have multiple USB outlets so you can charge multiple devices all at once.

Pocket-sized

image of pocket sized portable battery charger

The smaller portable battery charger has a capacity of around 3000 mAh to 5000 mAh, which gives just enough 1x charge to recent smartphones. Many of these with this capacity are stick-shaped, but some of them are flat and thin so you can have it with your smartphone together in a pocket. Most of them have only one output portl

If you need two or three times phone charges, you may need a capacity of 10000 mAh to 15000 mAh. When you choose a portable battery charger with this capacity range, you need to focus on not only how fast the charging speed is but also how many outputs it has. Mostly they have either one or two output ports. And you need to make sure of performance of each output port. They may have different output power or may not be the same when connected two devices simultaneously.

You can charge multiple phone charges with a portable battery charger with 20000 mAh or more. Keep in mind that 26800 mAh is the maximum capacity allowed by TSA for airplane travel. Most of them have two or three outputs, and you need to make sure of performance of each port. Plus, you need to know how many hours it takes to recharge the charger itself. Since it is a large capacity, it takes hours to recharge. You need to know if it is OK with your lifestyle, travel plan, etc.

Kiwi 4 OBD2 Adapter Review – issues on hardware and connection

Kiwi 4 is an OBD adapter. It is the 4th gen of Kiwi OBD scan tool by PLX Devices. The company added some new features such as micro SD card slot, Self-Run mode, audio alerts and warnings, etc.

image of plx kiwi obd scan tool

It has a very stubby design. This design may be good for some cars, which has the OBD port inside a fuse block because the adapter is so short that you can close the cover with the adapter plugged.

image of obd scanner length comparison

However, there is a problem for some other cars because of not length but width. It’s not noticeable, but it’s wide. It’s wider than any other adapters on the market. Some cars have the OBD port deep inside a plastic molding. The adapter hits the plastic molding and doesn’t fit without using an extension cable. It’s so disappointing. Kiwi 4 is exactly the same dimension as the predecessor, Kiwi 3. The company should have known the issue and redesigned.

image of obd scan tool width comparison

Kiwi 4 is compatible with the original app, Kiwi OBD and many other third-party apps. I tried Kiwi OBD app, but there is nothing special. It only works in a landscape mode. All gauges and meters are pre-set. I think it’s not worth of paying around extra $50 to obtain all licenses and activate all the features. You may activate most of the features for free if you backed their Kickstarter project (details here), but to be honest, this app is boring.

image of kiwi obd app

With Torque app, you can freely customize the display with many gauges, meters, and graphs. With OBDLink app and OBDLink MX+ adapter, or BlueDriver app and adapter, not only can you scan the engine computer but you can also access to ABS, SRS, TPMS, Transmission modules on supported models. Those apps are free with a purchase of the adapter, and the adapters are less expensive than Kiwi 4.

When I tried to use the Torque app, the connection wouldn’t be established. It seems that Bluetooth connection is OK, but a communication to the engine computer is not. It restarted the app or the engine, but that didn’t fix the problem. I exited the Torque app and opened the Kiwi OBD app again, and now the Kiwi OBD app stop working, too.

image of kiwi 4 connection issue

If I unpluged the adapter and plug it back, it works again. But when I closed the app and re-opened or opened the other app, it couldn’t get a connection. It was so frustrating. The adapter is not reliable.

There is a brand new feature, a Micro SD card slot on Kiwi 4. It’s used for Self-Run Mode. It allows you to log engine parameters without using a smartphone. But, as long as the connection issue exists, this feature is also reliable. It’s not a useful feature to me, anyway.

image of micro sd card slot of kiwi obd adapter

At the time of writing, Kiwi 4 is available for around $150 on PLX Devices website or eBay.com. But, I can’t recommend this adapter. Even if there weren’t connection issues, it doesn’t have a specialty to justify its high price.

A variety of Remote Control Organizers, Ideas and Solutions for cluttering remote controls

You may have a lot of media devices in your living room. Unlike a half-century ago, a TV is not the only device to entertain people in a house these days. There are DVD player, AV receiver, streaming player, cable box, and so on. You may have purchased a TV rack to store all these devices neatly, but what about remote controls that come with all the devices. Aren’t these scattered in your living room? Aren’t you sick and tired to search for them when you urgently need them? The problem is simple. They don’t have a particular place to be put. Getting a remote control organizer would be a solution. Here are some popular types of remote control organizer.

It’s simple and basic, but they are a variety of designs, size, and materials. Some have smaller compartments for keys or pens, and some can rotate 360 degrees on the bottom.

They are hanged on an armrest of the couch, sofa, recliner, etc. The side with pockets for remote controls faces outside, and the other side is tucked into a seat of a chair. It may have a pole on end to prevent an organizer from slipping. You can adjust the length hanging outside by rolling up on the pole. If an armrest is wide enough, you can choose ones with a tray on the top.

If you have a TV in your bedroom, needless to say, the bedside is the best place to store the remote control. They are the same as ones for a chair. One side hangs outside of the bed, and other is tucked under mattress or frame of the bed. You may want to consider an organizer with a pocket for a tissue box or a large slot for a magazine.

Most of them are made by acrylic, and they are clear, so they fit anywhere in the house. Not only can you mount it on a wall, but you can also hang it on furniture. Hardware such as screws and adhesive pads are most likely included.

Getting a Universal Remote to reduce the number of remotes

For those who don’t like the idea of getting something extra item on a coffee table or hanging on an armrest, you should consider getting a universal remote control. The benefit of a universal remote is to pair multiple media devices so you can consolidate some remote controls. The less number of remotes, the more easily you can keep track of them.

image of ge 4 device universal remote

A basic universal remote can be bought for around $10, and it can pair multiple media devices. For example, the remote in the picture above costs less than $10, and it can pair up to 4 devices.

Logitech Harmony 650 Infrared All in One Remote Control

image of Logitech Harmony 650 Infrared All in One Remote ControlIf you invest more, you can get a remote with a color LCD. The LCD helps you navigate, assign, and select a favorite channel easily. You can also configure One-touch Activity buttons. For example, pressing a single button will turn on the TV, AV receiver, and DVD player, and then open a tray of the DVD player. The Logitech Harmony 650 costs around $40. It can pair up to 8 devices.

Premium Universal Remote to pair all devices and smart home integration

image of logitech harmony elite remote controlThe first two (GE and Logitech 650) universal remotes are IR (InfraRed) based. You can pair them with devices that use only IR remote controls. If you want to consolidate other types of remote like Amazon Fire TV (Bluetooth) or Roku Streaming Stick (WiFi), you will need Logitech Harmony Hub-based universal remote controls. They come with a hub, and the hub is connected to your home WiFi network. This expends features even more. It can control and communicate other smart home devices such as Philips Hue and Amazon Alexa. Click here to see more details about Logitech Harmony Hub-based Universal Remotes.

Conclusion

What do you do to organize a bunch of remote controls? You may pick and use two solutions as a combination. For example, you buy a cheap universal remote to consolidate 4 of your media devices. You have one more device, say Amazon Fire TV, but you can’t pair it with the cheap universal remote. So, you keep and continue to use the original Fire TV remote. There used to be 5, and now 2. It’s much easier to keep track of, but you can also buy an organizer for a wall to make your living room even tidier and neater. You can choose whichever you like to tackle the problem of scattering remote controls according to your budget.

Using a smartphone as a Dash Cam with Android Dash Cam Apps

Dash Cams are getting more and more attention for protection and safety measure these days. It’s definitely better to have one in your car especially in case of a car accident. The advent of technology, Dash Cams have lots of features like extended recording using cloud storage, mapping using a built-in GPS, and a high quality of a camera. But wait, aren’t these features something you need to pay the extra money and get a new device? Well, your smartphone already has all of them. And, there are already some apps that allow you to use your smartphone as a dash cam. Here are some popular dash cam apps for Android.

AutoBoy Dash Cam – BlackBox

AutoGuard Dash Cam – Blackbox

DailyRoads Voyager

Dash Cam apps does a simple job. They use a camera on a smartphone to record your drive. But instead of using regular camera app, you can make a continuous recording just like dedicated dash cams. So, you don’t have to erase the recording manually over and over. Among these apps, their features are almost the same. You can use whichever apps above you prefer about its design or ease of use. And, all these apps have a pro version for $2.99 to $4.99. Pro versions basically offer No-Add in the app.

Dash cam apps work great. However, if you want a dash cam because you need extra security in a case of a car accident, you will definitely need a dedicated dash cam because it has more features that may help you in a case of car accident. So, it’s important to know that the pros and cons of dash cam apps and a comparison to dedicated dash cams.

Pros and Cons of Dash Cam App for smartphone

Pros

  • Free or less cost – Many apps are free, and some apps have pro versions that cost less than $5. You need a smartphone, but you probably already have one. You may have many unused smartphones in a drawer if you upgrade very often. Another item you need is a car mount. But, you may also have one already. Even if you don’t have a car mount, you can get a decent one for less than $15.
  • Front Camera – You can also use a front camera to shoot inside your car. You can switch back and forth with a single tap. Thus, it’s suitable for recreational use. For example, during a road trip, you capture the view of a scenic road and sometimes switch to a front camera to shoot your family enjoying inside your car.

Cons

  • Narrow FOV (Field of View) – Dedicated Dash Cams have a wider FOV than cameras on smartphones. It’s important because it captures a lot of information. For example, when you have an accident at an intersection, the other car ignores the stop sign and hit you on the side of your vehicle. Depending on the speed of your car and the others’, it may not have captured the other car’s driving at all.
  • No Motion and Impact sensors – Most dedicated dash cams have built-in motion and impact sensors. These sensors trigger the recording when a vehicle is parked. And, impact sensors also trigger when driving. For example, when you have an accident, it automatically stores the recording in the different section of the storage, includes 30 seconds before and after the impact from the crash, so it prevents the recording of the accident from erasing or overwriting by mistake.
  • No Optimal Night Mode – Although the quality of a smartphone’s camera is superb, it’s not meant to be for shooting a video in a dark environment.
  • Possible Overheating or Freezing – Smartphones are prone to overheating or freezing under heavy load. Besides, they aren’t created for long hours of video recordings. If you are out of luck, this may happen when you need it the most.
