Amazon Fire TV Cube review – The first hands-free streaming media player with Alexa

Amazon released a new Alexa-enabled device in June 2018. Fire TV Cube is the first hands-free streaming media player. As its name, Fire TV Cube is a cubic design. However, familiar buttons on the top for volume up and down, action, and microphone off, which you see on other Amazon’s Echo products. And, build-in eight microphones with far-field recognition hear your commands and questions. You can control the streaming player with your voice as well as compatible smart home devices, TV, sound bar, cable box, A/V receiver and more.

Hands-free TV and media control

Fire TV Cube is the first hands-free streaming media player. You have Alexa’s voice assistance directly inside the player so you can control your entertainment with your voice commands. The eight built-in microphones hear you even across the room thanks to far-field voice recognition and beamforming technology. You can ask Alex to turn on the TV, turn up or down the volume, fast forward or rewind, pause, resume, and so on.

Control other entertainment devices

Not only your TV can you control with your voice, but tens of thousands of devices including TVs, soundbars, A/V receivers, cable/satellite boxes from popular brands are compatible with Fire TV Cube. Fire TV Cube can be a great addition to your entertainment system. Even if you already own streaming player, switching to Fire TV Cube will allow you to control not only Fire TV Cube but also a sound bar, A/V receiver, and cable box with your voice. However, if you already own a universal remote like Logitech Harmony, Fire TV Cube may not work for you. That’s because you can already control all your entertainment devices with a single remote. Here is another situation that Fire TV Cube may not work for you. If you invested Amazon Alexa’s ecosystem, you might already own both Fire TV (or Stick) and Echo speaker. And you can pair two devices via Bluetooth and make a voice control. The control is limited to Fire TV, meaning you can’t turn on/off the TV, a sound bar or A/V receiver.
